I will use this page to list important notices to internal and external students. Please refer to this page regularly, at least once a week. The notices will be dated and in chronological order, with the latest notice at the top of the page.
For those still reading this page, there was a typo in the the reading list for topic 6. The line:
Section 6.5 - Introduction, 6.6.1 and 6.6.3
should read:
Section 6.6 - Introduction, 6.6.1 and 6.6.3
Section 6.5 is not covered in this unit. I have modified the reading list accordingly.
In the lecture notes page, there were links a few pages of lecture overheads which I put the comment "notes to come...". For those of you who haven't downloaded those pages yet, please do so. Don't wait for me to add the notes. I will try to put them in, but no guarantees. There is no getting away from reading the textbook anyway, so the lecture overheads and notes are only meant to be a guide.
After much pleading from a lot of you, I have been convinced to allow you to put markers on your textbooks to take into the exam. The markers should ONLY mark out different sections for easy reference. There can be NO EXTRA NOTES on the markers.
I have modified the exam instructions accordingly.
Please refer to the exams page for a sample exam and some updated guidelines on the final exam.
There is a typo in the project specifications. The line:
Miscellaneous networking costs per workstation: $500 per year.
should read:
Miscellaneous networking costs per workstation: $100 per year.
Now I understand why most of you are having problems coming in under budget. Sorry!
For the INTERNAL STUDENTS' project group allocations, I have made some changes to groups 55, 56 and 61. One member have been taken out of each of these three groups. Members of these groups please check the allocations page again. The remaining group members please proceed with the project with two members. The expected quality of your group component will be reduced accordingly.
16/5/2000
There is a minor mistake in the description of the project. In the logical layout diagram of the current network (in the Existing Network section), "Room 2.4" should be "Room 2.5". I have corrected the error.
For some reason, a lot of internal Assignment 1 scripts have gone missing from the assignment return box. If you can't find your assignment, send me an email and I will reply with your grade. You can bring your spare copy of the assignment to your tutor and he/she will give you feedback how you did.
A lot of students have been misunderstanding Assignment 2 Chapter 3 Q3. Read Q7 on the FAQ page for a clarification.
The project description is now available from the assignments page. As announced before on this page, please note the change in submission date.
I have made a few mistakes with the internal students group allocations I put up yesterday morning. I've had to modify the groups 33, 34, 51, 52 and 53. The members in those groups, if you checked it before now, please check the list again.
To enable the internal students to run the lab experiments required for Assignment 2 over the week after the semester break, I will accept all assignments submitted up until 12noon on Monday May 15th without penalty. This now applies to all students, including externals.
Even with this in mind, try not to leave it until the last minute to complete. You will have your Project to do, and I'm sure assignments from other units going into the last weeks of the semester.
27/4/2000
The Project (or the 3rd assignment) group allocations for INTERNAL STUDENTS is now available at this link. There is also a link from the unit main page. Wait for the project requirements to be put up later today, or tomorrow - I will announce it on this page. I will also put up a brief guide to how to approach the project sometime during the semester break next week.
Since I had to extend the submission date for Assignment 2, I will also extended the submission date for the Project to June 2, the last day of semester. The original submission date was May 26.
There is a typo in the
"...sequence numbers 1-4 and maximum window size of 7 ..."
should read
"...sequence numbers 1-7 and maximum window size of 4 ..."
I have corrected the mistake. If you are an external student, and have downloaded the question before this with the mistake, please download again.
Assignment two is now available. Please refer to the assignments page. Note that the submission date is April 12th, as announced on the the 4/4/2000.
A typo in the tutorial exercise sheet titled B227 Tutorial:
Basic Networking Tools: in the middle of page 3,
"www.telstra.edu.au" should be
"www.telstra.com.au".
I've left out some important files in the CD mail-outs to the external students! Please consult this page of additions and ammendments to the mail-out, on what extra things you need to do to get the system going.
Due to the fact that I can't gurantee every external student will get your dial-up to your ISP going, none of the assessments for external students will depend on the practical work. However, now that I have managed to get the material to you, I do urge you to follow the tutorial exercises week by week because it will enhance your understanding of data communications.
For some reason, there was a block on our network access on Tuesday, which meant that the internal tutorials run at that time did not have access to the outside world to do their networking exercises. That problem magically disappeared last evening (I'm still trying to find out what happened). So the students who missed out on Tuesday morning and afternoon, please finish off with this week exercises in your tutorials next week, and get on to next week's exercises after that.
For INTERNAL STUDENTS, there will be no tutorials this week (week 6). The CD's and LS120's are not ready for you to purchase, so there's nothing to do. For EXTERNAL STUDENTS, there has been a delay in sending out the CD's since what I announced on the 21/3/2000. The CD's are on the way to you, hopefully (finally!) they will get to you very soon.
Due to these problems, and the fact that your assignment 2 will depend on the computing work in the tutorials, I have extended the submission date for assignment 2 to May 12. The original date was April 28. I will post up the assignment questions soon.
Also, this is the final call for internal students wishing to form their own group for the project. I will still receive submissions for groups up until the end of this week. Those without a group will be allocated into groups randomly. If you only have two in a group, I will allocate a third randomly as well.
For those interested, you can download some pass exam scripts from the exams page I just put up. I've also put some preliminary information about the exam. DON'T bother me with queries about further details on the exam - I haven't thought about it yet! I will announce them reaching the end of the semester.
21/3/2000
After a whole lot of sweating, the CD's for the labs are finally ready. I am making copies now to send out to external students and, for internal students to purchase.
INTERNAL STUDENTS: You will need to purchase the CD, an LS120 disk and a 1.44 floppy disk. The LS120 and floppy disks can be blank. We will put the relevant files in them at the labs. Wait for further announcements about the sale of the CD's. Note that the CD's were created only for the lab machines, and will probably not work on other machines (especially if they have a different network card).
EXTERNAL STUDENTS: You will be sent a copy of the CD, with all the relevant instructions. It should get to you by next week. If you'd like a preview of the exercises you will be doing, here is a link to the RTF file with the instructions.
For internal students, I have put the assignment cover sheet as a link on the assignments page. You MUST complete one and attach to the front of your assignment.
Also for internal students, since the attendances for the Thursday lectures in the past two weeks haven't overflowed the capacity of the Robertson lecture theater, we will stay in Robertson. The move to Loneragan is cancelled.
I have started putting the lecture overheads and notes up on the web. They are linked from the lecture notes page. My plan is to make available the overheads before the lectures, so internal students may bring them along to the lectures to jot things down on. After th lectures, I will add extra notes on the overheads to elaborate the points further, and the assist you in reading the text book (which I admit is not easy to read without guidance). At the end of every Topic on lecture notes page is a list of readings. Use them to guide in in extra reading you are required to do, especially for the exam.
Also, since I want you to concentrate on understanding how things work, and not memorising uneccesary details, THE EXAM WILL BE AN OPEN BOOK EXAM. You will be allowed to bring the textbook (and the textbook ONLY) into the exam. But don't be misled into believing it will be easy. I will go out of my way to make sure a majority of the answers DO NOT come directly from the textbook, or if they do, they cover so much you will not have time to understand it if you don't understand it before the exam. You better make sure you know every concept when you go into the exam, because you will NOT have time to think about new things, and you will NOT have time to look up things you haven't encountered before.
I will give more instructions on the exam later in the semester.
5/3/2000
I have put up the Assignment 1 questions as a link in the Assignments page. The due date is Friday 24 March 2000.
At the end of Week 3, any students who are not officially enrolled will be removed from the lab allocation list. Make sure you're officially enrolled then. Anyone wishing to move to the vacated slots at that time please see me.
28/2/2000
There are still some technical problems with the LINUX set-up in the labs used to be used in our tutorial exercises. Because of that, the official tutorials will not start until next week (Week 3). For external students, the CDs will be posted to you once the problems are fixed - I will announce it here when that happens. Thanks for your patience.
Also read this FAQ question on tutorials.
It has been brought to my attention that the unit outline I sent out to external students indicates that the assignment submission for the Project is 26 March 2000. That is definitely wrong. It should be 26th May 2000.
The overheads from yesterday's introductory lecture is now available (as a web page) from a link in the Lecture Notes page. Have a look.
A word of caution for those interested in HTML: I will be preparing all lecture overheads from now on in StarOffice or MickySoft WORD - so the web pages of those overheads will be generate using those package. The moral of the story here is, DON'T LOOK AT THE HTML SOURCES FOR THE LECTURE NOTES. Code generators never generate clean code for reading.
23/2/2000
The tutorial allocation is now available here, as well as posted outside lab ECL2.050. The majority have been allocated to one of their first four preferences. I have been unable to allocated a remaining 11 students, mainly because they have selected the most popular sessions, and haven't supplied enough alternate choices. If you are one of them, please consult me to fix another time.
This list will probably keep changing as the semester progresses, as students move from one session to another. If you notice on the above page that vacancies arise in a session you better prefer, see me (or call me on the phone) and I'll move you to that slot. DON'T SEND ME EMAIL ON THIS MATTER - I'll end up having a hundred similar emails from everybody. The allocations are first-come-first-serve from now on.
The allocations for the tutorials will be done in the first week of the semester. In my first lecture on Tue 22/2/2000, I will hand out a tutorial preference sheet for everyone to fill out. I will then allocate you to your tutorial based and your preferences. The final allocation will be put up on the notice board outside lab ECL 2.050, as well as on this web page, later in the week.
If you miss the first lecture, or have enrolled late, you must see me personally to get yourself allocated to a tutorial.
