Tutorials Marking Guide
All tutorials will be assessed based on two components:
- Solutions to exercises.
- Participation in discussions.
The way these two components are assessed is different for internal and external students. Please read the requirements below.
Internal students
Internal students are required to sign-up for an internal tutorial session. Consult the unit coordinator if you have not done so.
1. Assessing solutions to exercises (50%)
Before turning up for each tutorial session, you are required to complete the tutorial exercise for that week. Put down a summary of your solutions in a written or printed sheet. This sheet must be handed to your tutor at the beginning of the tutorial. Your submitted sheet for each tutorial will be awarded marks of either 0, 0.5 or 1. The only two criteria for marks are:
- evidence you have done the topic readings, and
- evidence you have thought about the solutions (instead of regurgitation from reading materials).
Therefore, do not waste time on fancy formating or wording. Summarising in point form would be best.
Your submission will not be accepted outside of the tutorial sessions, except in very exceptional circumstances, and arranged with the unit coordinator before the relevant session.
You may make more extensive notes while preparing your solutions if you feel it will be useful for you in discussions during the tutorial sessions. You will not be required to submit these notes.
2. Assessing participation in discussions (50%)
During the tutorial sessions, you will be required to discuss your solutions to the exercises with your fellow students. Your participation for each session will be awarded an integer mark from 0 to 10. Marks will be awarded based on your capability to communicate with other students within the tutorial forum. The criteria for assessments are:
- Willingness to participate in discussions.
- Willingness to listen and understand others, and offer comments based what you heard.
- Capability to relate what others have said to what your initial solutions were, and comment based on that.
Whether your initial solutions are correct or not is not relevant here, so do not hesitate to offer them eventhough you may not be confident that they are correct. This part relates solely to communication skills.
External students
External students will be required to discuss solutions to the tutorial exercises first in the online forum, and then submit a summary of those discussions by Monday of week 13.
1. Assessing participation in discussions (60%)
You will be required to discuss solutions to the tutorial exercises with your fellow external students in the Tutorials for External Students group in the discussion forum. Marks will be awarded based on your capability to communicate with other students within the tutorial forum. The criteria for assessments are:
- Evidence that you have done the required readings.
- Willingness to share your solutions with other students in the discussion forum.
- Willingness to read and understand posts from others, and offer comments based what you understood.
- Capability to relate what others have said to what your initial solutions were, and comment based on that.
- Consistent participation throughout the semester.
You may also participate in discussions on the tutorial questions outside of the Tutorials for External Students forum group. However, only your posts in the Tutorials for External Students group will be assessed. You should also avoid posting outside the Tutorials for External Students forum group until after the relevant week, as internal students have still to submit their solutions in their internal tutorials.
There is no deadlines for when you must post your messages on the various tutorials. However, you will not gain as much marks from criteria (e) if you post all messages in one spurt at the end of the semester.
2. Assessing solutions to exercises (40%)
You are required to submit solutions to the tutorial exercises by the deadline on the assessment page. By then you would have seen the solutions posted by other external students as well. You will be required to submit in written or printed form:
- a summary of all solutions posted (not just your own) up to the Friday of week 12, and
- your personal evaluation of the discussions, as it relates to the original tutorial
Your submission for each tutorial will be awarded marks of either 0, 0.5 or 1. The only two criteria for marks are:
- evidence you have followed the discussions, and
- evidence you have thought about the discussions (instead of regurgitation from messages in the forum).
Therefore, do not waste time on fancy formating or wording for your submission. Summarising in point form would be best.
Unacceptable Behaviours
In all discussions, either online or during tutorial sessions, students should be sensitive to the opinions and views of others, and offer your comments appropriately. Students should especially be wary of the following:
- In online messages, due to the fact that it is in written form and is permanent, there is a lot more scope for misunderstandings. Please think very carefully about how you phrase you comments to messages posted by others.
- In either online or offline discussions, under no circumstances should one student insult or belittle another in an attempt to show off their own knowledge.
- Under no circumstances should you respond to insults by giving out further insults. This will only inflame the situation. You may complain directly to the unit coordinator in such circumstances.
