B336 Advanced Internet Computing

Software Downloads

This page is mainly for external students to download and install the required software off campus. Internal students will have the software available in the labs. Of course, internal students may choose to download and install the software in your home computer as well.

The files provided are mostly for Win95/98/NT. I haven't tried them on WinMe/2000. I will put up files for linux and other OSs if there are enough requests for it.

Installation instructions: Download XPSETUP.EXE, and double-click, and follow the instructions.

Installation instructions: Download from the xt directory, unzip xt-win32.zip, and put xt.exe in a convenient directory.

XML::DOM module:

Installation instructions: Install ActivePerl (see above). Make sure your machine in Internet connected. Start an MS-DOS command prompt and type "ppm" (Perl Package Manager). At the "PPM>" prompt, type "install XML::DOM" (Note the uppercases for the module name). PPM will automatically download the files, install the module, and update your online reference.

Nokia's WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Toolkit for Win32:

Installation instructions: Download NokiaToolkit2_0.zip, double-click, and follow the instructions.

Apache web server (optional):

Download the linux or win32 binaries from the apache_binaries directory, or download other versions from the original site below.

Original Site - When going through the download pages, watch out for options to select the nearest mirror site. Safest installation is to compile the source code on your local machine, but easiest installation is by downloading the pre-compiled executable files (eg. for MS-Windows, look for binaries/win32 directory in download page).

This is only if you wish to try having a web server from your home machine. It is not necessary for you to do so. In week 3, you will be given an account on red.murdoch.edu.au where you will be asked to install and run the web server.

PuTTY: Telnet and SSH client for Win32 (optional but recommended):

Installation instructions: Download putty.exe, put the file in a convenient directory, and make a link to it on your desktop.

SSH (secure shell) basically functions like telnet, but has all transmissions encrypted, rather than done in plain text as telnet does. Sending confidential information like your passwords on login are a lot safer using SSH.
