Unit Web Site

All students enrolled in this unit are required to have Internet access to obtain material from this web site. Students are also required to refer to the Announcements group in the discussion forum on the web site regularly for important announcements about this unit.

Internal Students

All software required for this unit will be provided in the internal laboratories. The laboratories are listed in the times and venues page. The laboratories are available during normal opening hours of 9am to 5pm. Arrangements to use laboratories outside these hours can be made by seeing the School of I.T. secretary. You will need your Student identity card and a special pass to use the laboratory.

Internal students must sign up for a two-hour laboratory. The first hour of the labs will be supervised by a tutor. Instructions on how to sign-up for a lab online is provided on the lab page on the unit web site.

External Students

External students must arrange their own access to a computer. The computer must have Internet access. Besides accessing the on-line unit materials, external students will also need to use the computer for programming exercises in assignments.

There are various ways of getting Internet access of your own through the university. Refer to the following page for advice on how to gain Internet access: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/cns/studnet/studnet.html

Besides Internet connection and a web browser, external students are not required to purchase any software of their own. Most software required for this unit are available by connecting to the School of IT's servers. Instructions on accessing the server will be given in the laboratory exercises. Software to connect to the servers can be downloaded from the downloads page.

You may also choose to install the required software on your own computer, to avoid having to connect to the server all the time for your exercises. There are instructions on how to do so in the downloads page as well. Keep in mind that your programming assignment will still be assessed on the server, so make sure you upload your programs to the server and test them fully before submitting! The standard excuse of programs working at home but not on the server will not be accepted.
