B211 Lab Problems

Problems with Lab Sessions

This information is relevant for for internal students only.

If you have not been allocated any labs yet, or you need to change your lab:

Check the lab allocations b211_tut_allocation.csv (this is a comma-separated text file - you may use any text editor or Microsoft Excel to view it), and find the labs that have less than 15 students.

Email the unit coordinator to request a place. Please send as many preferences as you can, in case other students have been allocated the empty slots before you. Your email message should look like this new request template or this change request template.

If you can only turn up for labs that are already full, you can do one or more of the following:

Use the "Lab Swap Mart" group in the discussion forum to see if anyone is willing to swap labs with you.

Turn up for a lab that is full, and see if anyone hasn't turned up. Usually everyone turns up for the first few weeks, then the numbers start dwindling. If a lab is full, then perhaps you can work in one of the adjacent rooms, where we have most of the software installed. You can come into the official lab and consult the tutor when you encounter problems. The danger with this is that most time other units are making use of the adjacent labs, and the tutor there may deny you entry into the room at that time.

Work on your own, and arrange times to see me to go through problems. This is similar to how the external students do their work. You have access to everything they have access to, including the instructions on software to install at home (in the downloads page). I do not recommend this though, since external students have a tutor allocated to them when it comes to off-campus assistance, but I may not have enough time to support and internal student's home endeavours. Also, it is always a lot easier to work when you have a tutor to assist you the moment something goes wrong.

If you are working without an official lab allocation, make sure you indicate this when you submit your assignments. Usually your assignments are marked by the tutor in the session you are allocated to. If you don't have an allocated session, I will arrange for one of us to mark it.
