Instructions for Internal Lab Sessions
The following information is relevant for internal students at the South St and Rockingham campuses only.
If you haven't signed up for labs yet, or you need to change your lab:
- Check the current lab allocations, and find the labs that have empty slots (less than 15 students).
- Email the unit coordinator to request a place. Please send as many preferences as you can, in case other students have been allocated the empty slots before you.
If there are no empty labs appropriate for you, you can do one or more of the following:
- Keep checking the lab allocations. If you see a place open up, then follow my instructions above to request a place.
- Use the "Lab Exchange" topic group in the discussion forum to see if anyone is willing to swap labs with you. Read the introduction in the topic group for instructions on how to do so.
- Turn up for a lab that is full, and see if anyone hasn't turned up. If a lab is full, then perhaps you can work in one of the adjacent rooms, where we have most of the software installed. You can come into the official lab and consult the tutor when you encounter problems. The danger with this is that most time other units are making use of the adjacent labs, and the tutor there may deny you entry into the room at that time. Please notify the tutor on duty if you are doing so, because he needs to assess your lab work.
- Work on your own, and arrange times to see me to go through problems. This is similar to how the external students do their work. You have access to everything they have access to, including the instructions on access to the unit's Unix server, and software to install at home (in the downloads page). I do not recommend this though, since external students have a tutor allocated to them when it comes to off-campus assistance, but I may not have enough time to support and internal student's home endeavours. Also, it is always a lot easier to work when you have a tutor to assist you the moment something goes wrong. You also have to turn up to one of the lab sessions weekly to have your lab work assessed.
Students enrolled at the South St campus may choose to do their labs at Rockingham, provided there are available empty slots in the Rockingham session(s). Similarly, students enrolled at the Rockingham campus may choose to do their labs at South St, provided there are available empty slots in the South St session(s)
